Baiter Park - 10th October 2004
I suppose it's silly to be surprised - every year the weather keeps us on tenterhooks - it turned out much the same as last year - South-Easterly all day, blowing hard in the morning (20 - 25mph) it faded somewhat in the afternoon (10 - 15mph, with gusts to 20mph).
Once again, overcast all day long, and everyone wore multiple layers of clothing to ward off hypothermia!
There were power kiters there again, but this year they seemed more friendly, so I was able to get their details, and let one or two have a got with my little Flexifoil Stacker, and Rev SLE 1.5 - which gave them quite a surprise with its speed and agility, after flying their "big boys".
Once again, sincere thanks to those "hardy annuals" who turned up - special thanks to John Higgins for the Cappuchino!

Baiter Park - 12th October 2003
The best way to describe flying conditions on the day is "challenging"...... the wind was mostly 10mph with gusts to 25mph.
All day long, the wind blew strongly from the South-East, the sky remained solidly overcast for 90% of the time, and except for the brief time the sun broke through, there was a distinct worry of hypothermia!
There were about 20 power kiters there too, but they did not take a blind bit of notice of our club activities, so I chose not to count them.
Heartfelt thanks to those hardy types who bravely turned out - I found the conditions quite exhausting!

I'd like to say that Harry looks stylish in his cold weather gear,
but he still looks like he escaped from the Damart catalogue (senior section)...
and quite why he has a flagpole growing out of his head...?
Rita gets all the best jobs - here rolling up Harry's kite tails for him!
There was me, nibbling a malted milk and slurping coffee to keep warm,
when I had this daft idea......
If the wind is strong enough to blow my chair over.....
It might be strong enough to actually fly a chair - no?
If we bridled it right? Well..... actually..... no
On your left - Jean Higgins and pink friend who nearly flapped his way to freedom!

On your right, our new organza flags show how strong the wind was
(thanks to Rita for all the hard work she put into the red/yellow one)
We had to put guy ropes on almost everything!
Des Vanstone and Jean Higgins braving the elements
That is the first time I ever saw Des in heavy weather gear
he had one ramair escape over the rooftops
On your right - Jean, Sue & Annabel keep warm, laughing at foolish men in the cold.

Baiter Park - 13th October 2002
Filthy weather on days like this are best forgotten - one or two clever types managed a little indoor flying, but that was all.

Baiter Park - 14th October 2001
Despite fitful winds, a solid overcast and occasional drizzle, we managed a respectable turnout on Baiter Park. Altogether our members managed to keep kites aloft from about 9.30am to 2.30pm, when the drizzle got bad enough to discourage all flying.
We all went home with cars full of soggy kites and banners, but we felt good about the day and made several new converts to "serious kiting" thanks to those visitors who were brave enough to "have a go" and seemed to enjoy it, despite the conditions.
Deep respect and gratitude to those members who made the effort and turned a not-so-pleasant day into an event to remember.

Jean Higgins told me there were also "two very cheeky Irishmen", but as they did not actually fly anything, we cannot really count them!
Likewise, although Harry's gazebo left the ground briefly, we felt that should be omitted!
